Genetic research. Researcher swabbing a petri dish to collect bacteria for analysis. These bacteria are being used to amplify fragments of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) for sequencing. A few bacteria were genetically engineered to contain the gene of interest and then grown in the petri dish. Bacteria divide rapidly, each time replicating the inserted gene. Once a large enough colony has been grown the DNA is extracted from the bacteria and sequenced. Photographed at the University of Newcastle, UK.
