Wheat stem rust. Stems of wheat (Triticum sp.) infected with the rust fungus Ug99. Ug99 is a new strain of the stem rust fungus Puccinia graminis. It was first discovered in 1999 in Uganda. As of 2008 the disease has spread across Africa, Asia and into the Middle East. Infection with Ug99 can be devastating, causing 100 per cent crop loss.
