Laboratory rat. A white laboratory rat, Rattus norvegicus, awaits experimentation. This is an albino rat bred from the original brown rat or Norway rat. Apart from laboratory mice, the white rat is the commonest mammal used in animal experimentation. For research purposes, animals may be used to test the safety of non-medical substances such as pesticides and cosmetics, or to test the effects of new medical products. The physiology of the white rat is in many respects similar to human physiology. However, the suffering caused by animal experimentation, particularly in non-medical research, has lead to calls for legislative control.
