Obesity research. Technician prepares an insulin injection for an obese laboratory rat as part of medical research into obesity. This experiment is being carried out in the laboratory of Prof Fruchart, INSERM unit at the Pasteur Institute, Lille, France. Fruchart's group have discovered that the hormone insulin has appetite suppressant properties. Insulin acts on a gene known as ob, causing it to produce the appetite suppressent hormone leptin. Laboratory rats that have a mutant ob gene cannot make leptin & are predisposed to obesity. Such work may result in the development of drugs to treat obesity.
