Rat cocaine research. Rat seen with cocaine. The rat may be used to study addiction or any of the other physiological effects of taking cocaine. Cocaine is an alkaloid drug that comes from the leaves of the coca plant (Erythroxylon coca). It produces feelings of exhilaration and energy. Prolonged cocaine use leads to psychological dependence. Overdoses can cause brain seizures or cardiac arrest.
