Parrot playing with computer. Researcher watching the African grey parrot Arthur (Psittacus erithacus) as he plays with a computer. Arthur is being trained to interact with images on the screen. He can also manipulate a joystick-like controller (red and blue, lower centre) on a "smart perch". Researchers are developing software, including games and a music browser, that could be used to stimulate captive parrots when humans are absent. The designs could also be used for software that would allow handicapped children to access the internet. This research is being carried out at the Media Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.
