Caption

Bee flight simulator. Researcher setting up a flight simulator for an experiment on a honeybee (Apis mellifera). The bee is tethered in front of a panel of green light-emitting diodes (LEDs, lower centre). These produce a 'virtual world' in which the bee can navigate. It is presented with visual and olfactory stimuli, and its responses are measured according to the forces it exerts on the mount. Honeybees are economically important as pollinators of many of the world's crops. Photographed at the University of Ulm, Germany in 2003.
