Harvesting stem cells from a laboratory rat. The stem cells are being removed from the rat's spinal cord. Stem cells are the precursor cells for all the cells in the body. Stem cell technology tries to culture these cells to grow tissues for use in transplants. A common use is to culture stem cells from the blood to form white blood cells and treat immune system diseases. Other sources of stem cells include umbilical cord blood, adult bone marrow, and embryos.
