Joyce Butler with Nim Chimpsky the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), named after American linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, and political activist Noam Chomsky. Student teacher Joyce Butler of Columbia University is showing the famous chimpanzee the sign configuration for "drink" and Nim is imitating her. Photographed during project Nim, an extended study of animal language acquisition conducted in the 1970s.
