Laboratory mouse. Mice are widely used as laboratory animals because of their close genetic and physiological similarities to humans. This mouse is from the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, Massachusetts, USA. This institute was the first to map the mouse genome. The result, published in 1996, is known as the Whitehead mouse map.
