Laboratory monkey. Macaque (Macaca sp.) in a cage inside an animal research laboratory. Macaques are the most common non-human primates (NHPs) to be used in animal research. They are widely used in pharmaceutical development and toxicity testing, along with research in genetics, neurology, cognition, reproduction and xenotransplantation (transplanting organs from one species of animal into another).
