Radar-tracked bee. Researcher uses a projected image produced by a harmonic radar system to track the flight path of a tagged bumble bee, Bombus sp., as part of pollination research. Tagged bees appear as "blips" on the radar image. The tags have an antenna which reflects a component (harmonic) of the incoming radar waves. By looking for harmonic reflections, "noise" from obstacles is eliminated. This system has been developed at the National Resources Institute in Malvern, UK, by Joe Riley to test the smallest-ever radar antenna. This radar system can track a bee to a radius of 700m, provided that it stays between ground-level and an altitude of about 3.5m.
