Penguin research. Biologists measuring the head length of a royal penguin (Eudyptes schlegeli). Measuring a penguin can reveal information about its age and health, and can be used to monitor the health of a population. The royal penguin inhabits the Southern Ocean between Australia and Antarctica. It lives in monogamous pairs in large colonies, and feeds mainly on small shrimp, squid and small fish. Photographed on Macquarie Island, Australia. This is the only place where these penguins breed.
