Biological researcher with a jar that he has been using to collect samples from a marine mangrove forest. Mangrove trees anchor themselves in submerged mud and breathe using specialised roots called pneumatophores, which protrude above the water's surface. The tangled mesh of roots provides a habitat for a wide variety of animals and plants, and many young animals live in the mangroves until they are large or fast enough to evade capture in deeper waters. Sampling such as this improves the understanding of how the ecosystem works. Photographed during French Auracea mission to northern Mozambique.
