Underwater research. Scuba diver entering the 3PP cave on the French Mediterranean coast. This is a 120-metre-long tunnel, near La Ciotat, at a depth of 15-24 metres. It traps cold water, remaining at a temperature of 13-15 degrees Celsius throughout the year. These conditions are similar to those found at greater depth, allowing populations of cold-water marine crustaceans and the formation of a unique ecology. Some of the sponges found in the cave are thought to have colonised it from a deep- water canyon nearby. The cave is often studied by marine biologists.
