Food for Biosphere 2. Biospherian Roy Walford seen inside the Biosphere 2 project building in 1990. In front of him is a selection of the sort of food expected to be grown in the project. The 3.1 acre air- and water-tight building became home for eight people during the two years of the experiment. Biosphere 2 was designed to allow study of the possibilities for humans to survive in a totally self-sufficient ecosystem. The costs of this controversial, $150 million project were met from private funds. The Biosphere 2 project building is at Oracle, Arizona.
