The egg's genetic material has been removed and now an adult cell nucleus is being injected in its place with a needle (upper right). The resulting embryo will consist of embryonic stem cells, the cell precursors from which all the body's specialized cells develop. Stem cells made from the cell nucleus of a patient could be used for therapeutic cloning, the creation of personalized tissues to replace diseased or damaged body parts.
