Stem cell. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a stem cell. Stem cells have the potential to become any of a number of different cell types. This is a haemopoietic stem cell, which can differentiate into a precursor for any type of blood cell. Stem cells are cultured to provide cells for use in the treatment of cancer and diseases of the immune system, such as AIDS and leukaemia.
