Brain cell differentiation. Light micrographs of the stages of maturing and differentiation of brain stem cells. From a single stem cell (A), successive replication cycles (B-E) lead to a large group of staminal cells (F). The final stage of maturation and differentiation is prompted by biochemical signals, leading to the formation of many types of nerve cells and support cells (G). The ones shown here are neurons (red) astrocytes (blue) and oligodendrocytes (yellow/green). Stem cells are being studied as a cure for a variety of disorders. This work was done in 2001 at the Stem Cells Research Institute (SCRI) in Milan, Italy.
