Apoptosis. Immunofluorescent Light Micrograph of a culture of normal human cells, showing apoptosis "genetically programmed cell death". Cell nuclei are blue; cytoplasm stains red; the cell membrane is green. At centre, a cell has undergone apoptosis: the nucleus fragments into blobs (blue- white), and the cytoplasm shrinks to form grape- like clusters. These cell remnants have then been eaten by a neighbouring cell (centre). Research on apoptosis may provide genetic treatments for diseases such as cancer. Immunofluorescence uses antibodies to attach fluorescent dyes to cell structures. Magnification: x250 at 5x7cm.
