Animal cell. Cutaway artwork of the ultrastructure of a generalised animal cell. The cell is enclosed in a permeable membrane. A central nucleus (pink) with a porous membrane holds the nucleolus (orange), site of the genetic material. Throughout the cytoplasm is the winding endoplasmic reticulum (ER), a membrane system studded with ribosomes (white dots) involved in producing membrane proteins and phospholipids. A golgi body (blue, below nucleus) receives these products from the ER. Mitochondria (red and orange) store energy and engage in aerobic respiration. The centrioles (yellow) help in the organization of genetic material during cell division.
