Cell death. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of sectioned cells (black and red) undergoing apoptosis, or programmed cell death. In apoptosis the cell itself initiates a sequence of processes which lead to its physical disintegration. The DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) condenses within the nucleus (black), as seen here. Later the nucleus will disintegrate and will be packaged, along with fragments of the cytoplasm and the cell organelles (micro- structures), into membrane-bound vesicles which are digested by phagocytic cells. Non-apoptotic cells (light red) are also seen. Magnification: x3500 at 35mm size.
