Cell nucleus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of the nucleus of a pancreatic cell, surrounded by cytoplasm. Every cell nucleus contains a complete copy of all the organism's genes, which are encoded in DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) molecules in the chromosomes. In human cell nuclei there are 46 chromosomes - 23 inherited from the mother and 23 from the father. The mottled appearance of the nucleus results from the unravelling of specific parts of the chromosomes while certain genes are being decoded to produce protein molecules. Magnification: x15,000 at 5x7cm size. Magnification x6600 at 35mm size.
