Freeze-fracture transmission electron micrograph of the surface of a plasma membrane showing the double membrane system of which it consists. The plasma membrane, consisting of an inner and outer membrane, surrounds and protects the contents of the cell. The lower half of the micrograph shows the inner-half membrane called the P-face, which contains numerous randomly distributed particles. The top of the micrograph shows the outer-half membrane called the E-face, which contains far fewer particles. Apart from protection, the plasma membrane regulates the passage of material in and out of the cell.
