Obesity-linked protein. Scientific illustration of a protein on the membrane of human adipose cells (the cells which store bodily fat) that is linked to obesity. This beta-3 protein molecule complex is blue with codes identifying different structur- es. Membrane fats are yellow with black tails. Researchers have found that large numbers of people with chronic obesity have a genetic muta- tion in the gene that encodes for this protein. Obese individuals who have a mutation in the gene encoding for this protein are, on average, 14kg heavier than obese individuals without the mutat- ion. Such research will lead to gene therapies.
