In steroid-secreting cells, the major part of the smooth reticulum may be in the form of extensive spiral or concentric arrays of fenestrated cisternae which in section resemble dermatoglyphic patterns. Not infrequently, the systems of cisternae are organized around lipid droplets, as in the upper part of the accompanying micrograph.
