Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of glycogen in a liver cell of the salamander Batrachoseps attennuatus. The black dots are glycogen, scatt- ered among several mitochondria (oval bodies) & the tubular network of endoplasmic reticulum. Glycogen, a polysaccharide, is the form in which carbohydrates are stored in an animal cell. It is broken down to yield glucose, & the further break down of the glucose releases energy. Carbohydrates are stored primarily in the liver & muscles, although deposits of glycogen may also be found in other types of cells.
