Sacred lotus flower (Nelumbo nucifera). The sacred lotus is a member of the water-lily family, but it differs from most other water-lilies by producing leaves that are held above the water's surface, The flowers last for one day only, and the seeds may germinate after many years dormancy. The plant is regarded as sacred in India and China.
