Mitochondrion. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a sectioned mitochondrion. This cylindrical cell organelle (microstructure, red) has two membranes: an outer surrounding membrane and an inner membrane which forms folds called cristae, seen here as red lines. The cristae are the sites of aerobic cell respiration, where sugars and fats are oxidised to produce energy. Parts of other mitochondria are also seen (top right corner and bottom centre). Magnification: x60,000 at 35mm size.
