Caption

Stress pattern. Polarised light micrograph revealing stress inside a twisted piece of plastic ribbon. These colourful birefringence patterns are caused when the different colours which make up polarised white light are rotated by different amounts as they pass through areas of high stress. Only those wavelengths of the right orientation can be seen when viewed through a polarising filter. Magnification: x0.5 at 35mm size.
