False colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the movement of a Swiss-made 17-jewel INCABLOC watch showing the top bearing of the balance mechanism which regulates the escape of power from the mainspring to the "train" of the watch (the reduction gearing which displays the time) & hence the beat of the watch. This particular example is of an INCABLOC, a shock-absorbing device whereby the central bearing is protected by a lyre-shaped spring, which gives on impact & thus protects the central circular pivot. Magnification: x 4 at 35mm size. H100/173.
