Caption

Russian dolls in a circle. These wooden dolls are carefully crafted to fit inside each other, with the smallest (lower centre) fitting inside the next largest and so on, until they all fit inside the largest doll (far left). The dolls can be male or female and are also known as nesting or matryoshka dolls. The first nesting dolls were made in Russia in 1890, inspired by souvenir dolls from Japan.
