Salt (sodium chloride) being poured from a salt- cellar. Sodium is an essential mineral in the body. It occurs in body fluids such as blood, sweat & tears. Its presence in the nervous system enables the transmission of electrical signals along the axon. The required dietary intake is debatable as are the consequences to the human body of over and under consumption. A reduction in salt intake may help to reduce high blood pressure in some people.
