Caption

A handful of rice. Rice is an annual grass, which grows wild in tropical parts of Asia and Africa. Cultivated rice (Oryza sativa) is descended from an Asiatic species. It is shallow rooted, and grows best in swampy or very wet lowlands. The rice that is eaten is the grain (karyopsis). Rice forms the staple diet of most of the Asiatic peoples.
