Edible algae. Selection of algae used as food or health-food supplements. At centre foreground are health pills made from Chlorella algae. The whole algae plants are from top left clockwise: sea vegetable, arami, wakami, kombu, with diced nori at centre. Chlorella freshwater algae is regarded as a "miracle food" for its nutritional value. It is rich in protein, vitamins and minerals, containing 19 amino acids including all the eight essential dietary amino acids. For general health maintenance a dose of 3 grams of Chlorella is suggested for adults per day. Traditionally, Chlorella was grown in China; it has come to be regarded as Japan's most popular health food.
