Caption

False colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of sea salt crystals. Sea water contains 3.6% dissolved salts, of which 75% is sodium chloride, which possesses a cubic crystal lattice. Other constituents include calcium chloride and magnesium chloride together with traces of other mineral salts. These other salts, together with mechanical handling during manufacture, are responsible for the irregular crystal forms seen here. Magnification: X 27 at 35mm size.
