Salt. False colour scanning electron micrograph of BDH Analar sodium chloride recrystallised from distilled water. The crystal is built up from a cubic lattice of sodium and chloride ions. In the absence of impurities the exact crystal form (cubic) is formed. The micrographs show that in practice this basic cube is most often disrupted by dislocations giving rise to crystals with a wide variety of shapes - all retaining the cubic symmetry. Magnification: X 80 at 6x6cm size. Pink & blue version.
