Maize grains. Individual maize (Zea mays) grains, or kernels. Maize is one of the World's most important crops. It is native to the Americas, and has been cultivated there for over 3,000 years. It is a very versatile crop, being used as food on-the-cob (the kernels still attached to the plant), ground to make flour, crushed to make syrup used in margarines and cooking oils, and distilled to produce whisky. Maize contains nutrients necessary to maintain good health, including vitamin A and potassium. It is the third most farmed crop in the world.
