Broken glass in spilt sugar. Taking advantage of the different properties of the glass and sugar allows them to be separated. First the mixture of sugar and glass can be sifted through a sieve, removing the larger pieces of glass. The remaining mixture can then be added to water. The sugar will dissolve in the water. Passing the solution through a filter paper will remove the remaining glass. The water and sugar solution can then be heated to evaporate away the water, leaving just the sugar.
