Carbohydrates. Selection of foods rich in carbohydrates and dietary fibre. These include rice (top right corner), bread (lower right), pasta (bottom centre), flour (lower left) and oats (centre left). Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for the body. Dietary fibre is any carbohydrate that is not affected by digestion, and thus makes up the bulk of faeces. Digestible carbohydrates are broken down in the gut to glucose, which is then distributed by the blood to cells which need energy.
