Salt. Polarised light micrograph of crystals of salt (sodium chloride). The salt crystals are built up from a cubic lattice of sodium and chloride ions. In the absence of impurities, exact cubic crystals would be produced. This image shows that in practice the basic cube is usually disrupted by dislocations. The crystal at upper left is the nearest to the perfect form. Magnification: x10 at 6x7cm size.
