Sea salt. View of crystals of sea salt. Sea water contains dissolved salts, mainly sodium chloride, but also calcium chloride, magnesium chloride and traces of other mineral salts. These other salts together with mechanical handling during manufacture lead to the imperfect crystal forms seen here. Sodium is needed for muscle contraction, the transmission of nerve signals, a regular heartbeat and the maintenance of the body's water balance.
