Junk food. View of an assortment of sweet and fatty foods, or junk foods. These include cakes (upper left), sweets (lower left), crisps (right frame) and a hamburger and chips (centre). All these foods are high in calories and fat, and relatively low in essential vitamins and minerals. Eating an excess of this type of food may lead to obesity and deficiency diseases. In addition to this, acid produced by oral bacteria from the sugars they contain can damage teeth. Carbonated drinks, such as the cola at upper right, are also highly acidic in their own right. The salt contained in crisps and chips may contribute to high blood pressure (hypertension).
