Barley grain. Coloured scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) of a section through a grain of barley (Hordeum sp.). The rectangular cells that comprise part of one barley grain can be seen. Many grains, which are the seeds of the plant, are found on each ear of barley. Barley is a widely cultivated cereal crop that is grown for human and animal consumption. It is a good source of carbohydrate, soluble fibre, vitamin E and many B vitamins, as well as a variety of minerals. One of its primary uses is as an ingredient in malt beverages, especially in the brewing of beer. Magnification: x350 at 5x7cm size.
