Caption

Light micrograph in Rheinberg illumination of woven silk fibres. Silk is a protein secretion from the caterpillar of the Silkworm moth (Bombyx mori). The moths are bred in silk farms, over half of which are in Japan. The caterpillar uses the silk to weave its pupa case. Once this is complete, the moth is killed and the silk fibres are removed. Magnification x80 at 5x7cm size. Magnification x40 at 35mm size.
