Caption

Dirty plughole. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the plughole from a kitchen sink. It is encrusted with limescale, which has been scraped away at upper left and lower right. Limescale is a deposit left when water rich in dissolved minerals evaporates. Limescale traps dirt and may encourage the growth of bacteria. Magnification unknown.
