Ultrasound test. Technician using high-frequency sound (ultrasound) to examine the internal integrity of a pipe at a chemical plant. The device the technician is holding against the pipe sends ultrasonic vibrations into the pipe. It then picks up the reflections of the signal and relays them to the device he is cradling. Faults, such as cracks, will strongly reflect the ultrasound waves. Cracks must be detected early in situations such as this, as a chemical leak could be extremely hazardous. Ultrasound is inaudible to the human ear, and provides a cheap, safe way of examining the interior of a component.
