Medieval manuscript. A laboratory researcher tests for the presence of fungal growth on the pages of a medieval manuscript. The researcher is using a cotton pad (at upper right) and a magnifying glass to pick up any dust from the book that may contain fungal spores. The dust is suspended in a tube of sterile water (seen at bottom right corner). Any fungal spores in the water may then be detected and the manuscript treated with an appropriate fungicide to prevent deterioration.
