Mummified body. Researchers' hands with the upper part of the mummified body of a boy. The body, housed in Varese, Italy, dates from around 1600. The boy is estimated to have been 12 years old at his death. Mummification has occurred naturally as the body's tissues have been dried by the air and have shrivelled rather than rotting away.
