Digital restoration. Researcher archiving and restoring a medieval music manuscript onto a computer. She is using a laptop to observe a digital scan. A purpose-built, high resolution scanner in the background scans the pages of a manuscript. Each page is digitally archived onto hard drives, with each image up to 250 megabytes in size. This is part of the Digital Image Archive of Medieval Music (DIAMM) based at Oxford University, England. The DIAMM project aims to record polyphonic medieval music manuscripts into digital format. In cases where manuscripts are damaged or obscured by overwritten layers, the researcher uses Adobe Photoshop and other software to manually re-touch and expose hidden layers.
